A Thesaurus has been produced as a tool to index the images on the Digilib Database. Terms in the Thesaurus have been compiled from various sources. The main source for architectural terms is the Art & Architecture Thesaurus On Line. Australian terminology is drawn from the APT (Australian Pictorial Thesaurus) and a list of in-house descriptors has been developed to cover specific local conditions. The LC Thesaurus for Graphic Materials I: Subject Terms (TGMI) is consulted for more general terms.
The 'Periods and Styles' used in the Thesaurus have been compiled from:
A pictorial guide to identifying Australian architecture : styles and terms from 1788 to the present / Richard Apperly, Robert Irving, Peter Reynolds ; photographs by Solomon Mitchell. North Ryde, N.S.W. : Angus & Robertson, 1989.
Australian spelling has been used throughout the Thesaurus.
Access to an online version of the Thesaurus will be part of a future update of this site.
